Total Knee Replacement

What is knee replacement surgery?

  • It’s a surgery where the damaged cartilage of your knee joint (usually due to arthritis or injury) are removed and replaced with artificial implants made of metal and plastic. This helps restore movement and reduces pain so that you can walk, climb stairs, and do daily activities comfortably.

Who should consider it?

  • If knee pain is constant, severe, and doesn’t get better with medicines, injections, physiotherapy, or lifestyle changes—and X-rays show advanced arthritis—then TKR may be the best option.

Is it a safe surgery?

  • Yes. Knee replacement is one of the most successful surgeries worldwide. It’s one of the most commonly done surgeries in India and in the world. Complications like infection or stiffness are possible but rare when performed by trained surgeons with proper care.

How long do knee implants last?

  • Modern implants last 15–20 years or more. With careful activity and healthy weight, some last even longer.

How painful is recovery?

  • Modern anaesthesia and pain-control medicines keep pain minimal. You will be encouraged to walk the very next day with support. Normally after 5 days, all pain control medication can be stopped.

Will I be able to sit cross-legged or squat?

  • Most patients can comfortably walk, climb stairs, and do daily tasks. Squatting and sitting cross-legged are allowed but usually restricted by surgeons for less strain on the implants.

What is the recovery time?

  • You start walking with support in 1–2 days. By 4–6 weeks, most patients can resume normal life. Full recovery, including strength and stamina, may take 3 months.

Will I need physiotherapy?

  • Yes, regular physiotherapy after surgery is the key to success. It improves strength, flexibility, and the long-term results of surgery.

Can both knees be replaced at once?

  • Yes, if your general health allows. Otherwise, they can be done separately 1-3 months apart.

Can I travel after surgery?

  • Most patients can travel in 4–6 days, but always consult your doctor before long flights to prevent blood clots.
