Sports Injury Management
What are common sports injuries?
- Sprains, ligament tears (ACL, ankle), meniscus injuries, shoulder dislocations, tennis elbow, muscle strains, and fractures.
How are they treated?
- Mild injuries are treated with rest, ice, medicines, and physiotherapy. Serious injuries may need arthroscopy or surgery.
Can I return to sports after injury?
- Yes, most athletes return to sports with proper treatment and rehab.
What is ACL injury?
- It is a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee, common in football, basketball, and running.
Does every ACL injury need surgery?
- No. Partial tears may be functional, but complete tears in active patients often need surgery. If the patient complains about giving way feeling, reduced confidence and instability, then surgery is highly recommended. There are enough studies done to prove that unstable joint can lead to early arthritis.
How long is recovery after ligament surgery?
- Usually 6–9 months to return to full sport.
Can sports injuries be prevented?
- Yes, with proper warm-up, stretching, strengthening, and protective gear.
What is PRP therapy?
- Platelet-rich plasma injection made from your blood, used to heal sports injuries faster. It has a set of indications where it can be given. However, it’s highly debatable whether it works or not.
Are children prone to sports injuries?
- Yes, especially growth plate injuries, which need special care.
Will physiotherapy alone help?
- For many sprains and mild injuries, yes. For major tears, surgery plus physiotherapy works best.
